I have had a lot of people ask me about Pity Kitty. He is a very special cat. When my husband and I were living in Socorro, NM we found him in the hospital parking lot. At the time we were still dating, and we REALLY did not need a kitten. Pity was disgusting, covered in some kind of oil, and matted. He had a broken back leg that looked like it had been broken for awhile. I told my boyfriend (now husband) to leave the kitten in the parking lot and I would go back into work and see if anyone wanted the kitten. Shortly after I got back into work, I texted him and asked him if the kitten was still outside and he texted back “no, he’s sitting here next to me. I knew you would never forgive me if I left that cat in the parking lot.” It was at that moment that I knew I could make babies with that man! The vet thought Pity had been thrown from a car because he had asphalt stuck in some of his wounds. Pity went through surgery to have his back leg taken off since it had been broken for so long. He is the happiest cat, but we know he has a phantom leg because sometimes when he has an itch, he will lean back and the little nub left of his leg will shake like he is scratching himself and then he will look satisfied. He is the most affectionate cat I have ever encountered. He starts purring if you walk into the room, you don’t even have to look at him. The other day we were having the outside of our house painted and pity could see someone on the other side of the front door through the cracks, so he sat in front of the door for half an hour purring, just waiting for the person on the other side to open it and love him. He doesn’t care who or what you are, he loves everything with a heart beat, including the dogs. He regularly bathes our other cat and dogs. Pity Kitty also loves children. If we have a gaggle of kids in the house you can always bet Pity is in the middle of them. His favorite treats are water from the tuna can and spilled goldfish crackers. When he was younger he loved the laser pointer but now he just lays there and bats at it lazily. He is the best cat in the world, except, he cannot be the only cat. He is now on his FOURTH baby. He has to have another cat that he raised from a kitten or he is a total jerk. If he doesn’t have a baby he slams cabinet doors at 3 am, hops up on the counter and turns on the garbage disposal, knocks everything off of every horizontal he can reach and attacks feet. But once he has a baby all of those behaviors stop! His first kitten, Crookshanks had a neurological disorder and was only with us for about two years. Macazoe was a female, who hated all of us, and she went to live with one of our friends when we found Nibbler. Nibbler was a great cat. We had him for about 8 years and lost him to cancer not long ago. A friend of ours was walking home from our house one night when she called me and told me she had found a kitten in the street. She then told me “I fed it a can of tuna!” (thanks Laura) Her husband wouldn’t let her keep it so he came to my house and pity and I promptly fell in love. He was just a tiny kitten, but he was microchipped. We left a message with his owners, and they didn’t call me back for about a week. By the time the called us back the whole family was in love and he was named Nibbler. The lady came to pick him up and my Husband was so in love with the kitten he said “offer her $100.” I didn’t offer her the money, but I did tell her if she decided she didn’t want him to call me. Less than a week later she called me and told me she didn’t want the kitten and Nibbler became a permanent part of our lives. When Nibbler died I was heart broken and SURE we would not get anymore cats, everyone was just going to have to love pity alone and that was that! But between my husband, my daughter, my son, and Pity Kitty they wore me down. One day I was walking from my closet to the bedroom and Pity reached out and grabbed my foot and bit it and I yelled, “That’s it we are getting a kitten!” My husband (he works from home) hopped up and we went to Petsmart to adopt a kitten. Nibbler was mostly black, and I was still pretty sore from the loss, so I did NOT want another black kitten. Mr. Rogers had other plans for me though. I was holding another orange tabby and I was pretty sure he was the kitten we were taking home, but every time I walked past his cage, Mr. Rogers would stick his little paw out and grab me. Reluctantly I decided to hold him and I knew the minute I held him he was our new kitten. We instantly named him Mr. Rogers and surprised the kids with him when they got home from school. First thing Pity did was give him a bath and he hasn’t attacked a foot or slammed a cabinet since. Mr. Rogers bonded to my daughter and we have a ritual every school morning, she stands outside my bedroom door, waiting for me. Then he runs ahead of my and waits for me at my daughter’s door. When I open her door he hops up into her bed and starts walking all over her to wake her up! He LOVED Covid because the kids were in the house all day for school. All school day he lay in her bed purring. Pity Kitty doesn’t care about the Hamster, Misty, but Mr. Rogers wants to eat her.
